Helicopter Deck Firefighter

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to function effectively and safely as a Helicopter Deck Firefighter at installations in accordance with current industry standards.

Certification

A Helicopter Deck Firefighter certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • chemistry and physics of fire.
  • fire terminology.
  • extinguisher and hose reel types and their operation.
  • demonstration of the correct use of fire extinguishers and hose reels on different classes of fire.
  • Role and responsibilities of a helicopter deck firefighter.
  • Helideck firefighting equipment.
  • Helicopter crash/rescue equipment.
  • Wear and operate breathing apparatus in emergency situations.
  • First aid.
  • Familiarity with different helicopter types and their operation and emergency procedures.
  • Become familiar with what fire protection is provided for each takeoff and landing.
  • Familiarity with management of dangerous goods.
  • Communication with HLO and pilots.
  • Shutdown and security of aircraft on helideck.
  • First response action during helideck emergencies.
  • Rescue techniques.
  • Casualty handling in emergency situations.
  • Evacuation of passengers during aircraft/helicopter deck emergencies.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of the fire classes and fire suppression techniques.
  • select and use hand extinguisher and fixed hose reels to suppress the fire.
  • demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of the chemistry of combustion and the basic principles of the physics of fire.
  • operate safely and communicate effectively while carrying out duties of a Helicopter Deck Firefighter.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

NZQA Unit Standard 3272. Participants are required to sign a declaration that they are in good health (have no medical, physical or psychological conditions that would affect their ability to succeed in this training) OR provide a current (less than 6 months old) medical certificate.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required.
Assessment involves a range of activities including:

  • assembling, checking and wearing BA.
  • use of extinguishment equipment on a range of fires.
  • effective use of search and rescue principles and techniques.

Revalidation

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

  • Photo ID.
  • Covered-in footwear.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for wearing under Fire Fighting attire.
  • Socks.
  • Water bottle.
  • Change of clothes and towel for available shower.

Health

A Medical is mandatory prior to the course commencement and ability to work in confined spaces.

Research shows that you are more susceptible to heat distress disorders if you consume alcohol within 24 hours of training with live fire. We recommend you do not consume alcohol 24 hours before training nor over the days of training”
