Emergency Response Team Leader (Fire)

This course is for people who may need to lead the response to petrochemical emergencies as a member of an emergency response team at a petrochemical worksite, or as a member of a fire and rescue service.

Certification

An Emergency Response Team Leader (Fire) certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Assessing a petrochemical emergency, selecting and applying petrochemical emergency strategies and tactics.
  • Minimum manpower techniques.
  • Decision making.
  • Fire attack techniques.
  • Demonstrating leadership in various selecting and applying petrochemical emergencies and rescue situations in a simulated environment.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Assess petrochemical emergencies.
  • Select and apply petrochemical emergency strategies and tactics.
  • Lead petrochemical emergency control.
  • Ensure that recovery actions can proceed for petrochemical emergency operations.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

Current medical certificate. This course builds on the knowledge gained in Emergency Response Team Member – NZQA US 3271, 3272 and 4647.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The assessment will involve scenarios activities in the role of Team Leader.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

  • Photo ID.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for wearing under Fire Fighting attire.
  • Socks.
  • Covered in footwear.
  • Water bottle.
  • Change of clothes and towel for available shower.

Health

A MEDICAL is MANDATORY prior to course commencement.

Research shows that you are more susceptible to heat distress disorders if you consume alcohol within 24 hours of training with live fire. We recommend you do not consume alcohol 24 hours before training nor over the days of training”

Ryan stands out as a well-rounded emergency response professional with experience across multiple areas.

Steve’s background includes serving with the Royal Marines Commando, a teacher of Art and Design, Fire Fighter (NZFS), Ship Security Officer maintaining security. His personal passion lies with mountaineering and climbing, bringing valuable rope skills and rescue to the Industrial rope access industry. Steve has a strong understanding of teams working under high pressure in high hazard and high stress environments. He holds a postgraduate Certificate in Education as well as qualifications in Training, Assessment, Rope Access and Occupation and Health and Safety.
