Corporate Defensive Driving

The objective of this course is for students to learn the theoretical aspects of driving safely on NZ roads, protecting people, company profits and assets; being able to apply risk reduction techniques and strategies while driving.

Certification

Students who have met the required standard will be awarded the relevant unit standards and a NZQA certificate.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • driving hazards.
  • risk reduction techniques for dealing with driving hazards.
  • use of crash risk reduction strategies while driving.
  • Understanding driving risks, hazards and dangers of speed effects and tiredness.
  • Understanding how environmental conditions impact safe driving.
  • Knowing how to implement safe, economic and efficient driving patterns.
  • Being able to practically apply all theories.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe driving hazards; and the use of crash risk reduction strategies while driving.
  • Apply risk reduction techniques and strategies while driving.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course Prerequisites

Must hold appropriate drivers licence for class of vehicle.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. Assessment involves an observed 40 minute drive including different driving situations, roads and speed limits.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every three years.

Required equipment

Vehicle which will need to be available for the practical assessment must have current certification.

Items to bring

  • Current valid NZ drivers licence for vehicle being driven.
  • Covered-in footwear.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for classroom situation.

Bob Korewha

There isn’t much that Bob can’t drive or operate.  Bob is a MITO, and Connexis registered assessor, a Competenz registered Forklift Trainer and an NZTA approved assessor.  Bob started his career as a Driver/Operator within the Transport and Building Industries and has spent the last 20 years training people on safe driving and operating equipment.  He believes in giving the right information to the candidate so that they can make the right decisions out there in the workplace, that teaching the safe use of heavy machinery includes a strong approach to forming a safety culture at their workplace so that the operator goes home safe every day.
