Mobile Elevating Work Platform – Refresher

This course allows experienced MEWP operators to update their current knowledge and demonstrate current competency in assessment of hazards and MEWP operations.

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course students will be issued with a certificate.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • different types and use of MEWP’s.
  • PCBU and worker responsibilities.
  • knowledge in workplace hazard identification and safe operation of a MEWP.
  • pre-start operations of MEWP’s.
  • load limitations of a EWP.
  • knowledge of the shut down and make safe of a MEWP.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the PCBU and worker duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
  • Identify types of MEWPs, their suitability for purpose; and safety features.
  • Describe key safety features of a MEWP and identify safe working loads.
  • Identify hazards, risks and controls to prevent harm/damage.
  • Prepare MEWP for use, carry out operations in a workplace environment, re- port faults, and shut down an MEWP.

Course structure

A combination of theoretical and practical assessment, discus- sions/recapping on knowledge already attained.

Machinery

At the time of booking please advise the machinery types to be refreshed.

Course prerequisites

Student must already hold US 23966 and the relevant practical unit standard/s for the machinery they are refreshing or a documented equivalent that is deemed acceptable by Wood Training. The student must also have experience operating the MEWP before they can undertake this course.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can per- form all tasks required. Assessment involves operating an MEWP in a controlled environment.

Refresher

Under the Best Guidelines for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms – Section 6, 6.3, it is stated refresher training should not exceed three years.

  • PhotoID.
  • Correct PPE must be worn including steel-capped safety boots.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for classroom situation.

There isn’t much that Bob can’t drive or operate.  Bob is a MITO, and Connexis registered assessor, a Competenz registered Forklift Trainer and an NZTA approved assessor.  Bob started his career as a Driver/Operator within the Transport and Building Industries and has spent the last 20 years training people on safe driving and operating equipment.  He believes in giving the right information to the candidate so that they can make the right decisions out there in the workplace, that teaching the safe use of heavy machinery includes a strong approach to forming a safety culture at their workplace so that the operator goes home safe every day.
