Truck Loader Crane – Refresher

This course is for students to refresh their current knowledge of crane hazards and controls. An opportunity will also be provided for participants to demonstrate continued skills in slinging, lifting, moving and unloading/placing loads, securing and preparing a truck loader crane for road transport and stowing equipment after use.

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course students will be issued with a certificate.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Identify relevant legislation and documentation regarding Crane Operations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of hazards and controls associated with operating a truck loader crane.
  • Identify critical components and equipment including the care and use of lifting equipment.
  • Assess the worksite and prepare to lift and place loads using a truck loader crane.
  • Sling, lift, move, and unload or place regular loads using a truck loader crane.
  • Secure and prepare a truck loader crane for road transport mode, stow equipment and to complete appropriate documentation.
  • Carry out checks and maintenance.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of common terminology; controls to mitigate hazards; pre-start checks; equipment characteristics; and safe working practices.
  • Lift, move, unload or place loads following manufacturers’ instructions and company procedures.
  • Secure and prepare the crane for road transport mode; stowing equipment.
  • Park crane and put away equipment at completion of the work.

Course structure

A combination of theoretical and practical assessment, discussions/recapping on knowledge already attained.

Prerequisites

Student must already hold Unit Standard 16617 or a documented equivalent that is deemed acceptable by Wood Training.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. Assessment involves an observed lift.

  • Photo ID
  • Comfortable clothing with covered footwear suitable for classroom situation.
  • PPE requirements for practical: Safety boots and all other PPE will be supplied.

Minimum of four hours based on six students. Time will vary dependent on the number of students. Contact the office if any variations are needed.

There isn’t much that Bob can’t drive or operate.  Bob is a MITO, and Connexis registered assessor, a Competenz registered Forklift Trainer and an NZTA approved assessor.  Bob started his career as a Driver/Operator within the Transport and Building Industries and has spent the last 20 years training people on safe driving and operating equipment.  He believes in giving the right information to the candidate so that they can make the right decisions out there in the workplace, that teaching the safe use of heavy machinery includes a strong approach to forming a safety culture at their workplace so that the operator goes home safe every day.
