Asbestos Awareness

This introductory course provides the students with a basic overview of asbestos including risks and controls, its likely location, planning for removal work and PPE requirements.

Certification

An Asbestos Awareness certificate will be issued on completion of the training.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Asbestos properties.
  • The three main types of asbestos.
  • Health risks.
  • Legislation.
  • Asbestos management plan – removal control plans, notifiable works, air monitoring, managing risk.
  • Video presentations.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the three main types of asbestos in NZ.
  • Identify risks associated with the exposure to airborne asbestos fibres.
  • Identify PPE requirements to protect someone from being exposed to airborne fibres.

Course structure

The course is a theoretical session.

Assessment process

There is an informal formative written assessment task that places when student is ready.

None.

  • Comfortable clothing suitable for participating in practical exercises.

Thomas has been involved in Workplace Health and Safety since 2012.  He has spent many years working for WorkSafe NZ and is enjoying the transition from regulator to educator. He holds a Bachelor of Science as well as a Work Health and Safety Diploma and is currently a Licensed Asbestos Assessor.
