The canteen kids certainly enjoyed the annual Wood Group PSN Canteen Fireworks display that was held on Saturday 14 December 2013. This year the event was bigger and better than previous years. Wood Group PSN staff organised and funded the event so all that the Canteen families had to do was turn up and have a great end of year function.
The activities the kids and their families enjoyed included rides in the Opunake Fire Brigade fire truck, extinguisher and foam demonstrations, bonfire and guy making, fireworks and a BBQ. Donations of two Wood Group work vans and three other vans kindly donated by Jameson’s Hire were available for the evening to ferry people from town to the fire ground 40 minutes out of town.
Fire Trainer John Sharp, who organises this event every year, said “this is just a small way that we can give something back to the community in a very positive and fun way. Just seeing the delight on these kids’ faces as they watched the fireworks was thanks enough for me”.
Approximately 50 people attended the event including Wood Group PSN staff, fire brigade members and canteen families. A bucket for donations was available on the night and the money left over from the event budget was also donated to Canteen.
The Canteen kids and families enjoyed a fantastic evening of fun and laughter. Donations of $200 cash included $50 from staff who attended. Wood Group PSN donated $1,000 for the evening and was matched by sponsorship from other companies.
