This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to correctly receive work permits in the workplace.

Certification

A Permit to Work – Receiver certificate will be issued on successful completion of all assessment requirements.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • What is a permit system?
  • Legislative workplace requirements.
  • General permit requirements.
  • Types of work requiring permits.
  • Permit types.
  • Authorisation/endorsement, cancellations.
  • Permit changes.
  • Associated documentation.
  • Isolations and requirements.
  • Completion of two (2) permits for practical assessment.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the types of work permits, the roles of those involved in the work permit system, and the requirements for receiving a work permit.
  • Explain the preparatory requirements when applying for a work permit.
  • Accept a work permit and undertake work under the permit.
  • Describe and carry out the controls and actions to be taken at the end of a work period or upon the completion of work.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

It is highly recommended that students have achieved Hazard ID US 17602, Risk Assessment US 30265, Taranaki Passport Plus US497, 17593 or equivalent before attending this course.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The practical involves completion of two permits signed off by the assessor on the training day.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every three years.

Consultant, Training Facilitator and company director, Mal has a history of work in the oil and gas sector, process operation and hazard management.  He has extensive experience in many roles in the workforce and brings authentic experience to the training situation.  With a background in physics, chemistry, statistics and human anatomy he knows his subject matter well, and this knowledge and experience comes to the fore in his training and delivery.

Steve’s background includes serving with the Royal Marines Commando, a teacher of Art and Design, Fire Fighter (NZFS), Ship Security Officer maintaining security. His personal passion lies with mountaineering and climbing, bringing valuable rope skills and rescue to the Industrial rope access industry. Steve has a strong understanding of teams working under high pressure in high hazard and high stress environments. He holds a postgraduate Certificate in Education as well as qualifications in Training, Assessment, Rope Access and Occupation and Health and Safety.
