Overhead Crane – Refresher

The objective of this course is for the students to refresh their current knowledge of the company procedures and requirements for lifting practices for radio remote or pendant controlled overhead cranes; and the functions, care and use of the crane and equipment. They are also able to show their practical knowledge on how to sling, lift, travel and unload or place regular loads used in the workplace; and park the crane and store equipment.

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course students will be issued with a certificate.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Use a radio remote or pendant controlled gantry crane.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of crane terminology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of hazards and controls associated with operating an overhead crane.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of lifting equipment.
  • Identify critical components and their functions.
  • Carry out checks and maintenance of a radio remote or pendant controlled gantry crane.
  • Use appropriate communication methods.
  • Apply knowledge of lifting equipment rating charts.
  • Prepare a range of loads to be lifted, moved, unloaded and placed.
  • Park a crane and store equipment.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of common terminology; controls to mitigate hazards; pre-start checks; equipment characteristics, and safe working practices.
  • Carry out pre inspection checks prior to selecting the correct lifting equipment to sling a variety of loads following company procedures.
  • Lift, move, unload or place loads following manufacturers’ instructions and company procedures.
  • Park crane and put away equipment at completion of the work.

Structure

A combination of theoretical and practical assessment, discussions/recapping on knowledge already attained.

Prerequisites

Student must already hold Unit Standard 3800 or a documented equivalent that is deemed acceptable by Wood Training.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. Assessment involves an observed lift.

  • Photo ID
  • Comfortable clothing with covered footwear suitable for classroom situation.
  • PPE requirements for practical: Safety boots and all other PPE will be supplied.

There isn’t much that Bob can’t drive or operate.  Bob is a MITO, and Connexis registered assessor, a Competenz registered Forklift Trainer and an NZTA approved assessor.  Bob started his career as a Driver/Operator within the Transport and Building Industries and has spent the last 20 years training people on safe driving and operating equipment.  He believes in giving the right information to the candidate so that they can make the right decisions out there in the workplace, that teaching the safe use of heavy machinery includes a strong approach to forming a safety culture at their workplace so that the operator goes home safe every day.
