This course provides students with skills to support life in a variety of emergency situation until qualified assistance is available.

A Provide Basic Life Support Certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.

Standard: Unit Standard 6402 L2 C2 V9

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • chain of survival.
  • primary patient assessment/DRSABCD.
  • dangers: scene assessment and hazard management.
  • response – AVPU shout and tap.
  • sending for help.
  • airway, breathing, circulation (CPR adult/child and infant)
  • stable side position.
  • airway obstruction adult/child/infant.
  • use of automated external defibrillator.
  • secondary patient assessment.
  • shock and bleeding.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students will be able to:

  • provide basic life support.
  • manage a foreign body airway obstruction.
  • manage first aid for life threatening bleeding.
  • provide first aid management for a person in shock.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

None.

Assessment process

This course includes theoretical assessment and practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required.

Assessment includes demonstration of the stable side position, and simulated emergency situations from a range of scenarios for CPR adult or child and infant; choking adult or child and infant; bleeding and a person in shock.

Revalidation/Refresher

There is no associated revalidation course for this stand alone unit standard. To maintain current competency for this unit the student should hold a current first aid certificate covering at least 6401 and 6402 and attend a First Aid Revalidation course.

Jenny's career started with the RNZN and then transferred to the RNZAF.  She has spent 13 years on the road as an Emergency Medical Technician with the TDHB & St John.  For the last 15 years Jenny's career changed to being a First Aid Instructor.  In that time she was also a Health Consultant for 3.5 years being involved with Annual Health/Medical monitoring.  Jenny holds various qualifications in Pre Hospital Emergency Care and Adult Education & Training.
