Coxswain (Survival Craft) Refresher

This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills required to safely undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities required when taking charge of a survival craft on an offshore installation.

Certification

A Coxswain (Survival Craft) Refresher certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • refreshing knowledge of types of survival craft, and equipment
  • refreshing knowledge of Coxswain responsibilities
  • loading, launching and operating a survival craft

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • load, launch and operate a survival craft under emergency conditions
  • manage survivors and survival craft when required to abandon ship

Course structure

The course is a combination of a small amount of theory as it is largely a practical course. Students will be sent pre learning in the form of course notes to refresh their knowledge. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

A current medical certificate as a reasonable level of fitness is required for this course. This includes being able to use a ladder with a reasonable level of flexibility; and able to
operate a boat safely. We must receive this document no later than 48 hours before course commencement. If not received within this timeframe you may be declined entry to the course. This
decision will be taken on a case by case basis. You must have successfully completed the full 2-day Coxswain course.
You must complete the pre-learning before the course.

Assessment process

Theory session is followed by practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that theycan perform all tasks required. The assessment will involve mustering, boarding, launching and handling of a survival craft.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Wood Training recommend this is done annually.

  • Photo ID.
  • Comfortable clothing for theory sessions
  • Appropriate streetwear can be worn.
  • Safety boots are required for entry to Port Taranaki when conducting TEMPSC activity).
  • Water bottle

Health

A MEDICAL is MANDATORY prior to course commencement.
